Durable Materials - Sustainable Shoes
Nae is exclusively working with sustainable materials to fabricate your shoes. The brand is highly concerned with environmental stability and thus strictly use environment-friendly materials such as cork, ecological microfibers and pineapple leaves.
You can read about the different materials below.
Pineapple Leather is a Zero Waste MaterialThe pineapple leaves are by-products of the current pineapple production in the Phillippines. To grow pineapples rather than raising animals avoid animal rights as well as animal welfare issues. At the moment the pineapple leaves are burned in the Phillippines. By avoiding this burning process as well as not contributing to the farming of animals, makes this plant based option a much less carbon and water heavy alternative to animal leathers. Read more about pineapple leather here, and check our entire pineapple leather assortment here.
Real Raw Shoes
Cork is a raw material, which is 100 % reusable and recyclable. Cork workers harvest the bark of big oak trees, which will grow out as new bark. Since it is not necessary to harvest the entire tree, the cork is per se a sustainable material. Furthermore, it is very easy to recycle cork products and cork by-products, which are two distinctive aspects making cork a sustainable choice.
Additionally, in terms of footwear, cork has some great benefits. Cork shoes are very comfortable to wear, they are lightweight and the material is waterproof, soundisolating, soft and in Nae's design stylish.
Recycled Plastic Bottles
The innovative material PET is taking what we no longer need and making it into useful items as shoes. By recycling plastic bottles and tyres the PET is created.
Vegan Nappa & Suede
Nae's vegan leathers are made from OEKO-TEX certified nylon, polyester and cotton. By choosing certified fibers you are ensured lower environmental impact and waste minimazation.
This "pleather" is as sturdy as the animal ones and easier to keep clean. However, they are more environmental friendly as you avoid toxic tanning (see the pineapple leather description above) and climate-hostil industrial farming. A perfect cruelty-free alternative to animal leather.
Nae's latest sustainable initative is to use recycled airbags in the shoe production. Actually, they use nylon, which is inside the airbags, as a new waste material for their eco-friendly production.
Nae has a high focus on both sustainability and the welfare of workers. Everything from design to production of their ethical shoes takes place in Portugal, a country which is well known for their knowledge in creating footwear. Moreover, one of Nae's core principles is to exclude human exploitation completely.
In relation to the materials, for instance the pineapple fibers used in the production of Piñatex, comes from the Phillippines. In fact, the natural and sustainable Piñatex is made from pineapple leaf fibres, a by-product from the pineapple harvest. The production is in compliance with labour legislation and in line with human rights. This illustrates how it is possible to promote social development and increase income of the farmers already growing pineapples. Besides creating jobs, the company behind Piñatex is also donating money to empower social change in the Phillippines.
Once the pineapple fiber is dry, a textile finishing company in Barcelona turns the fibers into sustainable high performance natural textile. Herefter, Nae receive the textile at the production facility in Portugal, where it finally becomes the fashionable and sustainable shoes we love.

All Nae shoes are vegan. Nae shoes are, just a Lendemain Organic, certified with PETA's "PETA-Approved", which means that no animal products are used in the fabrication of their products. But why should you choose vegan footwear?
Most importantly, when buying vegan items you do not harm animals in any way! Moreover, when choosing shoes made from alternative materials rather than animal leathers, you also avoid tanning. Tanning is the process of converting the raw animal skins into leather. The tanning process alters the protein structure of the skin, which prevents it from decomposing. This turns the skin into a more stable material. However, Tanning is a major problem in the animal leather industry, as it is intoxicating the sourroundings of the workers and thus creates a harmful work environment.
Vegan footwear is a non-toxic alternative, and with tanning being on top five of most toxic industries in the world, this is a crucial point. Both for the animals and for the planet.
